At maturity, the stem of this cactus changes from a spherical form to a barrel form with 21 to 37 dark-green ribs. The plant has very numerous areoles on each rib and white colored woolen hairs at the top. Bright yellow flowers appear in the upper areoles in summer, but they only appear after 20 years. The green fruits are spherical and covered with white wool.
