It has branched, sharp stems with yellowish spines. The bright green leaves are alternate, elliptic with deep rounded lobes and they are also covered with long spines on both surfaces. The violet flowers are borne in clusters of 3 to 5; they are followed by fleshy tomato-like fruits containing brown seeds.
